Tattooing Your Back

By Kenneth Orr

One of the most common places to have a tattoo is on the back. The trend for women right now is the lower back tattoo, which generally is less about self expression and more about the fact that they're sort of sexy down there.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. Men and women alike also get tattoos on other parts of their back - and even the lower neck - and adventurous tattoo collectors sometimes have their entire backs covered with anything from intricate murals to flowers swirling in the wind to skulls spitting blood.

What makes it interesting is that the wearer almost never gets to see their own tattoo. But this is because they have it done for others to see, such as when they are on the beach. Sometimes they choose a back tattoo for personal reasons or simply because of practicality, such as needing a larger space for a large tattoo.

But it really doesn't matter if the ink work you have done is a large or small design because the back is great for both. So if you are trying to make up your mind about getting one what should you know beforehand? Well, the most obvious thing to consider is that it is going to be there for a long time so you should decide if it is what you really want. This applies no matter where you have the tattoo done on your body.

A tattoo on the back requires just as much after care as any other. Therefore the fact that you cannot see it does not mean you can disregard it. The health of your skin is on the line.

In order for the tattoo to look great for years to come it will need proper care after it is done, as all tattoos take time and care in order to heal properly. An "out of sight out of mind" mentality is definitely out of the question.

There are those who insist that back tattoos are rather painful but then no tattoo is ever going to be painless. Depending upon where the tattoo is done you will feel either more or less pain.

For women considering getting a tattoo on their lower backs originality is a big consideration. You might the type of woman that wants something different than the majority. Your tattoo does not need to be semi-tribal, semi-ornate, or terribly intricate and swirling all over your back. Let your unique personality determine the tattoo you choose.

Another very important consideration you should not dismiss is that your body will change with the passage of time. A comedy skit on Saturday Night Live illustrated the changes wrought to the tattoos women get on their lower backs over time.

Over the years, the tattoo ends up looking quite misshapen and not terribly attractive due to the effects of time and the changes we're all subject to as we get older. It's not that you shouldn't get one - just be aware of the fact that you will change physically and your tattoos have no choice but to go along for the ride.

The duration which you will be in the tattoo parlor will depend on the size and intricacy of your tattoo. The other factor will be whether your tattoo is to be drawn in a single color or multiple colors. For first timers, tattoos can be really painful. However, numerous individuals will bear this pain in order to get the tattoo on their skin.

There are many risks when getting tattoos, and the most dangerous one is contracting diseases. Many of the diseases which can be transmitted as a result of poor or lack of precautionary methods are not curable. Save yourself the trouble and be safe during tattooing.
